Agoraphobia and Panick Recovery Supportive Books

During the more than 40 years since I recovered,  I have kept up with much of what has been written and published about agoraphobia, always eager to see how other treatments compare with what I learned from Dr. Weekes. What I discovered was that the only treatments that seemed to be successful were those that included and reinforced her methods with additional and supportive techniques.

I also discovered that reading another persons perspective and way of interpreting and explaining something that I already know, reinforced my understanding. This was the case with the below highly recommended books:

Natural Relief From Anxiety – Edmund J Bourne PH. D.

This is an excellent manual for anyone wanting to holistically cure themselves from anxiety and panic attacks. All of Dr. Weekes’ methods and teachings are included and reinforced, as well as just like my book,  additional advice and techniques that help are also offered.

The book is written by Dr. Edmund Bourne, a psychologist, former director of the Anxiety Treatment Center and best selling author of three other books about anxiety and phobias.  He does an excellent job of explaining the exact mechanics of what causes anxiety, how we create our own panic and how it is managed and ultimately extinguished when accepted and correctly responded to.

I highly recommend this book as additional and supportive reading.

Mindfulness: An Eight-Week Plan for Finding Peace in a Frantic World – Mark Williams

In my opinion, this book should be re-titled: How To Master Acceptance.

Mindfulness only came about in the 1990s but has since then achieved tremendous approval by the medical world due to more than a thousand tests that were done that prove that it is as, and in some countries a more effective treatment for nervous illness than medication.

In chapter 24 of my book, I wrote about how my recovery was enhanced by spiritual meditation. I actually started practicing non spiritual Transcendental Meditation during my recovery, and believe that beside all the other actions that I took, it also made a contribution.

This book teaches a very simple method of non spiritual meditating as well as a very powerful technique to accept everything that is going on in one’s body, mind and emotions, even in the heat of anxiety. With utter acceptance being one of the fundamentals of the Dr. Weekes method, this is why I highly recommend this book also as essential reading.
